Both the best and most frustrating thing about these cars. Which engines fit? What needs modifying? Instructions (if I can get copies/or people scan them to PDF & send in) / settings / which ones are good/bad? So far, my favorite is the Irvine 20 - but that might change with the 3 or 4 types that I have lined up ready to try! I found the the PDF download on the right really helpful to help me start to get my head round tuning - all credit to "bekramodels" for producing this.

Thunder Tiger 21 FSR ABC car engineReally nice Engine. Started first time (although clearly hadn't been used for may years prior to me winning the car off e-bay). Reliable tick-over - someone had invested the time to properly run it in.
Good pick-up, very powerful - clearly I will never need to really open it fully up in a Marauder - it might end up in the Landjump. Runs very cleanly - not a drop of oily gunge was left on the chassis after a good 20 minute run. It hardly seems to use any fuel - and it is not running lean either. Be aware that the engine holes are about a quarter of an inch further back than the standard Irvine 21 holes, although the radio box seems to be in the same place. Very pleased with this one. PDF instructions below. Update 22nd May. Just had this running in one of the cars, I wasn't timing it, but it probably ran for about half an hour, without having to be restarted at all. Quite powerful, not too noisy & didn't really get too hot. Am delighted with this, and it is probably my favorite engine at the moment. |
Royal 21 FSR-B ABC engineThis one didn't start off to well. The carb proved almost impossible [for me] to tune, the engine didn't like having a pressure feed from the exhaust and it got just plain frustrating.
However, I had a spare Irvine carb in the spares box and thought that I would give that a go. The transformation was immediate, with it idling nicely, 'clearing its throat' when opened up and really taking off round the garden and it had stopped cutting out after about a minute each time. It is not fully tuned, but is getting there. I believe that this engine was a clone of the OS engine of the time and I am told that while the carb looks great (see picture opposite) - it is not very good, well that concurs with my experience. The engine is gain powerfull and I am almost starting to like it! Again the chassis was re-drilled to accomadate the longer crak case, but the radio box still mounts in the same place. PDF manual below. Update 22nd May. I have spent 3 evenings trying to tune this with both its own and a spare carb. Probably driven the neighbours bonkers with the noise. Got very frustrated, the longest run was about 3 mins. I have officially given up on this and won't waste any more time on it. I believe that whilst they were OS clones, the internal tollerences were not good. An ABC engine relies on the right fit and things expanding properly when it heats up. If anyone wants it (without the exhaust or clutch), let me know!
